Útlínur jökla eru dregnar eftir loftmyndum, gervitunglamyndum, kortum og leysigeislamælingum á yfirborði en einnig raktar með GPS-mælingum. Elstu útlínur sem teiknaðar hafa verið eru frá því á litlu ísöld og byggja þær á kortlagningu á jökulgörðum og öðrum landformum sem jöklarnir skilja eftir. Oft eru notaðar flugljósmyndir til hliðsjónar, sérstaklega til þess að útkljá vafaatriði þar sem erfitt er að greina jökulsporða, sem geta verið þaktir sandi og grjóti, frá landinu umhverfis.
