Hægt er að skoða landupplýsingar fjölmargra stofnana í Landupplýsingagátt. Um er að ræða staðtengd gögn/kort, svo sem hæðargögn, ýmis mörk, landnotkun, örnefni, loftmyndir og fleira. Lýsigögn eru skráð um öll gögn í gáttinni og geta notendur, t.d. stjórnvöld, fyrirtæki og almenningur, fengið upplýsingar um gögnin og aðgengi að þeim og notað gögnin t.d. í tengslum við skipulagsmál, landnýtingu, náttúruauðlindastjórnun, innviðaþróun, umhverfismál og rannsóknir. Bætt aðgengi að landupplýsingum styður við upplýsta ákvarðanatöku í tengslum við skipulagsmál og áhrif á umhverfið svo eitthvað sé nefnt.



Landupplýsingagáttin er starfrækt í samræmi við lög um grunngerð fyrir stafrænar landupplýsingar frá árinu 2011. Þar kemur fram að opinberum aðilum beri að miðla stafrænum landupplýsingum á samræmdan hátt og að stofnanir eigi að veita aðgang að niðurhals- og skoðunarþjónustum. Tilgangurinn með starfrækslu Landupplýsingagáttar er einmitt að bæta aðgengi að staðtengdum gögnum og upplýsingum um þau (lýsigögn), ásamt því að gera gögnin aðgengileg í gegnum niðurhals- og skoðunarþjónustur.

Landupplýsingagátt was developed in accordance with the law on the basic structure for digital geospatial information since 2011. It states that public bodies must share digital geospatial information in a uniform manner and that organizations must provide access to download and inspection services. The purpose of operating the Land Information Portal is precisely to improve access to location-related data and information about them (metadata), as well as to make the data available through download and viewing services.
